The Bible talks about good being called evil, and vice versa. Some people do crazy things that “seem” right to them, but are an abomination to God, like abortion, artificial birth control, homosexuality, gluttony, human cloning, adultery, fornication, pornography, assisted suicide, and embryonic stem cell research. Our society today tells us all that the above things are all wonderful and fulfilling. The newspapers, movies, billboards, and TV all tout them as being very good. But are they really? Is man smarter than Almighty God?
And speaking of movies, we have all watched and enjoyed shows like “The Sting”, or the old “Mission Impossible” TV show, where sly and cunning people set up crooks, murderers, and thieves, so as to make them believe a fake reality. The purpose of these set-ups was to make the bad guys say and do things they wouldn’t ordinarily say and do, because they somehow trust the very people who are deceiving them. Well, that is EXACTLY what satan does to us. Satan sets a table that is so appealing to our human senses, and that “feels” right, so that we fall in his trap time and time again. Unlimited sex? Sure, why not? God will forgive me. All you can eat buffet? Sure, why not? I deserve it, after all. Easy money? Sure, why not? Everyone else is doing it. His traps that appeal to our senses and human nature, along with our tendency to rationalize our participation in evil, are our downfall.
In 1 Corinthians 10, Paul tells us to take as a warning the example of the Israelites wandering in the desert, who themselves were deceived. Even after God killed the Egyptian army for them, and parted the
In Exodus, 16, the Israelites grumbled and murmured against God because they were hungry, and preferred to be back in
Egypt with full stomachs. God rained down manna from heaven for them as a result. How many of us murmur against God because of physical ailments, money problems, or because our neighbors have it better than we do?
The Israelites then put God to the test, in Exodus 17, grumbling about a lack of water and wondering if God was really with them or not, even after He parted the
Red Sea for them. How many of us also put God to the test daily with our pride and arrogance and sinfulness, all the while thinking that He will forgive us in the end, so what’s the big deal?
In Exodus 32, they didn’t think that Moses was ever coming back down from the mountain, so they started to fornicate and get drunk, all the while worshipping a false idol. As a result, 3,000 of them were slain, and God sent a plague on the rest of the sinners. So aren’t we exactly like that today? So many people don’t ever think that they will ever die, or that Jesus will ever come back, so they turn to fornication, pornography, and drunkenness, which is like worshipping the golden calf of paganism.
No, our fate if we do these things will be just like the fate of the Israelites who were struck down in the desert for their sinfulness. Granted, 40 years is a long time to be wandering in the desert, but their own sinfulness is the reason they wandered so long. Had they been true to God in the first place, the trip from
“Do not commit a sin twice; even for one you will not go unpunished.”
Today, more people are deceived into thinking that there are aliens from another planet who have landed on earth than believe in the power of the Holy Spirit. People are deceived into thinking that a huge retirement plan is more important than faith in Jesus Christ. People are deceived into thinking that it is better to read novels and play computer games all day than it is to read the Bible. People are deceived into thinking that because of the actions of a small minority of priests in the homosexual altar boy scandal, that the whole church is rotten to the core. People are deceived into thinking that the Eucharist is just a symbol of Christ’s Body and Blood, and not real. People are deceived into thinking that artificial birth control and abortion are good things, instead of intrinsic evils. People are deceived into thinking that homosexuality is good, instead of being one of the 4 sins that cries out to God for vengeance. People are deceived into thinking that the Boy Scouts are evil, because they have a moral code. People are deceived into thinking that pornography is harmless entertainment. The list is endless. In the future, it will get even worse as we rush headlong over the cliff of abominations.
So how can we keep from being deceived like so many others? Stay true to The Church, no matter how scandalous some priests and bishops act. Jesus said in Matthew 23:1-3:
Then said Jesus to the crowds and to his disciples, "The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat; so practice and observe whatever they tell you, but not what they do; for they preach, but do not practice.”
In other words, sinful leaders of an organization do not negate the power of the organization. If it were otherwise, all of Christianity would be considered rotten because of the action of Judas, one of the apostles, hand picked by Jesus, who betrayed him. Many countries today have sinful leaders; this doesn’t mean that the whole country is sinful and no good. Rather, it only means that those particular individuals are sinful, and NOT the group they represent.
Many people today have left the Church for one reason or another, and they will be among the ones who are deceived. So if you see someone performing signs and wonders, whether it’s “street magic” or something else, ALWAYS test the spirit (1 John 4:1). If they know and love Jesus Christ as God, then it’s no big deal, and they are probably from God. If, on the other hand, they do not, then they are of the antichrist (1 John 2:22). And SAY THAT ROSARY EVERY DAY! Mother Mary will be there during your life to protect you from any and all deceptions, and especially at the hour of your death, when satan will try one last time to get you through deception.
Isaiah 5:20: Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
Proverbs 14:12: There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.
John 8:44: You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
1 Corinthians 10:1-14: I want you to know, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same supernatural food and all drank the same supernatural drink. For they drank from the supernatural Rock which followed them, and the Rock was Christ. Nevertheless with most of them God was not pleased; for they were overthrown in the wilderness. Now these things are warnings for us, not to desire evil as they did. Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to dance." We must not indulge in immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. We must not put the Lord to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents; nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. Now these things happened to them as a warning, but they were written down for our instruction, upon whom the end of the ages has come. Therefore let any one who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your strength, but with the temptation will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. Therefore, my beloved, shun the worship of idols.
2 Thessalonians 2:9-12: The coming of the lawless one by the activity of Satan will be with all power and with pretended signs and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are to perish, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore God sends upon them a strong delusion, to make them believe what is false, so that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
Luke 18:8: I tell you, he will vindicate them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of man comes, will he find faith on earth?"
