Romans 2:6: For he will render to every man according to his works
One of the most marvelous inventions of our time is the television. A box in our living room that allows us all to be witnesses to events all around the globe, and even on the moon. And all in the twinkling of an eye, at the speed of light. News, entertainment, and now even the internet come to us over the TV.
While all of this can be a force for good, it can also be used to program our brains, our personalities, and our ideas, for evil. Constantly changing images on TV, thousands of times in an hour, not only makes it very hard for TV watchers to sleep later on, it also makes it very difficult to meditate and to contemplate on what is truly important – our eternal salvation. Instead, we are all being programmed to think about our looks, eating more pizza, spending money on useless gadgets, investigating murder mysteries, committing fornication, being more like crime fighting personalities, etc. And most of all of this takes place in a false world, where dangerous stunts do not cause death, where no one prays during catastrophes, where priests are always evil, where the rich and powerful are seen as the most important people in the world, etc.
There is some good TV, for sure. But even that is being polluted with indecent commercials. In the old days, the people that produce off-color programming would say – “Well, if you don’t like it, don’t watch it”. And that argument carried some logic to it. But now, good shows that kids watch have commercials advocating male enhancement, birth control for females, and lots of beer drinking. Hard liquor, which previously didn’t advertise on TV, is now advertising its product, in shimmering, glowing, slow motion pouring.
The news shows are also programming our kids. During the
And you will be inundated with noise – through gunshots, through obnoxious background music, through loud commercials, through car chases, and through very loud secular dialogue . None of which will lead you to have an original thought about anything. None of which will lead you to a personal relationship with Jesus. None of which will make you closer to your family. None of which will lead you to do good works. On the contrary, watching a lot of TV will make you eat more food; it will let you in on all of the latest gossip about stars and politicians; it will make you believe that being bad is good; it will make you spend more money on useless junk; it will cram your brain full of thoughts that are not of God; & it will make you spend useless hours of your life DOING NOTHING, which is exactly what the devil wants.
All of the 7 deadly sins are enhanced by watching TV:
Lust - Watching scantily clad starlets and beautiful reporters;
Gluttony - Watching slo-mo pizza while eating chips and drinking beer;
Greed - You can have it all if you just buy this product;
Envy - How come the people on TV have everything and I don't ? ;
Pride - Watching tough guy shows, who need no one else to help them;
Sloth - I can't volunteer for anything because I'm too busy watching TV;
Anger - How can those people on the news get away with everything and not get caught?
On the contrary, God wants you to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the sick and imprisoned, counsel the doubtful, etc. These are known as the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. How you can accomplish these things while watching decades of TV during your life is a mystery. With the possible exception of EWTN, most TV programs will have a very negative impact on your eternal salvation. Especially shows that badmouth the Church that Jesus Himself created, and is still the Head of. Especially where the hosts know NOTHING about Catholicism, and pass themselves off as some kind of expert on the Catholic Church. Turning off these shows and boycotting their sponsors would be a great idea.
A good rule of thumb on TV watching is to give back to God, through prayer and good works, as much time as you spend watching TV.
